DeFuniak Springs is home to one of the two naturally round lakes in the world.

During Costa Rica's arribada , as many as 100,000 Olive Ridley turtles come ashore on Ostional National Wildlife Refuge's isolated beaches, leaving behind as many as 10 million eggs. Arribadas  generally occur at two- to four-week intervals from April to December, peaking July through September. 

It takes 75,000 trees to print one Sunday Edition of the New York Times.

on May 20, 1970 Florida lawmakers passed and sent to the Governor a bill adopting the moonstone as the official state gem. Ironically, the moonstone is not found naturally in Florida...nor was it found on the moon.

The name Punta Gorda , which means, "fat point " when translated from Spanish. The moniker was given to the city because a broad part of the land in Punta Gorda juts into Charlotte Harbor. The harbor itself is somewhat unique, as it is the point where the Peace River meets the ocean.

There are more than 121 volcanic formations in Costa Rica, and seven of them are active.  Poas Volcano has the second widest crater in the world and just reactivated in April again & Arenal is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world.

A household rooftop solar panel system can reduce pollution by 100 tons of CO2 carbon dioxide in its lifetime—and this includes the energy it took to manufacture the solar panels. Solar panels can improve future air quality for humans as well as the millions of birds, fish, and mammals that are negatively affected by pollution each year.  The cost of solar panels has dropped by 80% since 2008,  and it is expected to keep falling. A good time to consider it now!

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a cable-stayed concrete bridge. Opened in 1987 the bridge coasts through the clouds at 190 feet above water. Its bright yellow support cables spread from the two center pillars. The structure gives drivers unobstructed view of the water during the 4.1 mile trip over Tampa Bay.

Costa Rica's basilisk, a small semi-aquatic lizard, has been given the nickname “Jesus Christ lizard" due to its habit of rearing onto its hind legs and appearing to run across the surface of the water when alarmed.

Isla del Coco is the most remote part of Costa Rica, nearly 360 miles (600 km) into the Pacific Ocean, southwest of the mainland. At 8 miles by 3 miles (12 km by 5 km), Isla del Coco is the largest uninhabited island in the world.

Every day in the U.S., we produce enough trash to equal the weight of the Empire State Building . We throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour, produce enough styrofoam cups annually to circle the earth 436 times and trash enough office paper to build a 12-foot wall from Los Angeles to New York City. We throw away 570 disposable diapers each second, and toss out enough aluminum cans to rebuild our commercial air fleet every three months.  Please try to recycle and reuse more in daily life, like drinking out of a glass etc!
